Staying at Burra Motor Inn

Burra sits in a valley surrounded by hills where the topography plays a major role in shaping local
weather conditions. Variations in rainfall, wind strength, and temperature between nearby weather stations are common due to differences in elevation, aspect, and exposure.
Weather systems typically arrive from the west or northwest. As air rises over nearby ranges,
this can produce orographic rainfall, leading to heavier falls in the right conditions.
Burra Motor Inn is in a sheltered, creekside location, which often results in lower wind readings and sometimes higher rainfall than nearby sites.
Explore Burra’s topography at location.sa.gov.au, or contact us if you would like to share your own observations on local weather patterns. We’d love to hear from you!
Spring is a great time to go sightseeing around in the Mid North. We visited Tourlie Gorge in the Caroona Creek Conservation Park and admired the geology, native wildflowers, and the old bullock trail.

Exploring Local Weather in the Burra Region
Community & Personal Weather Stations in the Goyder Region
Throughout the Goyder Region and beyond there are many Personal Weather Stations operated by individuals, schools, businesses, or community groups that contribute valuable weather data. While they may vary in accuracy and equipment, they offer helpful insights into the diverse weather patterns observed across our landscape.
You’ll come across many more personal weather stations when exploring weather apps or interactive maps. For example, stations can be found in Clare, Mintaro, Riverton, Eudunda, Jamestown, Peterborough, Black Springs, Orroroo, Yunta, and numerous other locations throughout the Mid North.
Together, these community and personal weather stations provide valuable local insight, helping reveal how conditions can vary across the Mid North. Operated by individuals, schools, farms, businesses, and community groups, they complement official observations by capturing the effects of local terrain, elevation, and exposure.
Finding local personal weather stations
Personal weather stations are most easily discovered via public mapping platforms such as Weather Underground, Windy, and Weathercloud. Together, these provide the most practical and comprehensive public view of local stations across the region. Additional networks, including APRS CWOP, AWEKAS, OpenWeather, PWS Weather, Windguru, Meteobridge-based services (Aurora), and WOW (UK Met Office), also contribute data that feeds into broader forecasting, analysis, and historical records. Agricultural weather stations are common on Weatherlink. Our on-site weather station at Burra Motor Inn shares data with platforms such as Weather Underground and the UK Met Office WOW network, providing additional context and long-term records for the township. It’s normal for nearby stations to report different conditions. Local factors such as elevation, exposure, terrain, vegetation, and shelter can cause meaningful variation even over distances of just a few hundred metres.Current & Historical Weather Observations

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) is a great starting point for accessing historical weather data, most of which is based on readings from Clare. Search “Burra” or “Clare” to view current and historical records.
For more Burra-specific data, the Burra Community School (BCS) has maintained records since 31 March 2014, available on their station profile via the UK Met Office’s WOW (Weather Observations Website).
To explore even older data, Geographic.org provides historical weather records for Burra dating back to 1961, also sourced from BCS.
The BOM occasionally publishes BCS data as well, though it’s not always easy to find. The quickest way is to run a Google search.
For those interested in longer-term historical context, the Burra History Group has documented a small number of notable weather-related events spanning more than a century. These records reflect rare and exceptional conditions rather than everyday weather, and help place modern observations into historical perspective.
The Burra History website provides a valuable local resource featuring original photographs, contemporary reports, and extensive material covering Burra’s social, industrial, and environmental history.
If you’re lucky, it may even snow during your time in Burra. It’s a rare event, recorded a mere half a dozen times since 1901.
